Established 2700 years ago by Emperor Jimmu, the Japanese monarchy is the oldest continuing hereditary monarchy in the world, and according to Shinto, the Emperor Jimmu was a direct descendant of Amaterasu-ōmikami, the Shinto goddess of the sun. For that reason, the shrines enshrining members of the Imperial family have a distinctive status, recognizable by the term Jingū attached to the shrine’s name.
