The small shrine in this photo taken at the Hakone shrine is dedicated to two brothers who lived 800 years ago, known in the Japanese tradition as the Soga brothers,
The Soga brothers are famous for revenging their assassinated father by killing the murderer 18 years later. Their story, emphasizing loyalty and courage, became famous during the Edo period through a kabuki play named “Tale of the Soga Brothers” (Soga Monogatari), traditionally played during the New Year.
