There were several gates to the Nisshin-kan, which was one of the best han (feudal domain) school in the medieval Japan, available to people depending on their social status.
The gate in this photo, Minamimon (the South gate), was the main entrance, dedicated to the domain’s lord and to the high-ranking samurai.
