The shimenawa rope connecting the famous Meoto Iwa rocks photographed here marks the place as sacred, because the two rocks are representing the central deities of the Shinto religion, Izanagi and Izanami.
Since it is exposed to harsh weather, the rope needs to be changed 3 times a year, so ceremonies are held on May 5th, September 5th, and in the middle of December.
