The most popular deity (kami) in Japan is Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice and food. There are about 3000 shrines in the country dedicated to kami Inari, and the small shrines on the sides of the road are probably ten times this number.
There are also countless shrines inside private homes and corporate offices, and Inari shrines were also built inside the Buddhist temples, like the one photographed here, a beautiful Inari shrine at the Yakuoin Yuki-ji temple, on the Takao-san mountain.
