One of the first fire protection techniques used for the first Western style buildings in Japan was plating the walls with copper plates.
Made in various shapes and sizes, the copper plates were also decorative, sometimes even engraved with drawings. A few of these buildings survived until today, and can be found in the older neighborhoods of Tokyo.
