The original name of today’s Inokashira pond was Nanai pond (meaning “seven well” pond), because it was supplied by 7 springs. A story says that the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, stopped nearby the pond’s shore while returning from a hunt and, with his wakizashi, sculpted on a magnolia tree the word Inokashira, which means wellhead, the source of well water.
