Unlike many other countries, in Japan the school year starts in April. And with the start of the new school year, the pilgrimages to the shrines dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane are starting too. Sugawara Michizane was a well known scholar, poet and politician from the Heian period, who was deified as Tenjin, kami (god) of learning.
One of the most popular shrines dedicated to Tenjin is the Yushima Tenjin Shrine from Ueno, Tokyo. During the exams period, the shrine is often crowded by students (but also by their parents) who come to pray for success at exams. And some of them are returning after the exams, to thank for success:
