Kidai Shoran - A Glimpse of Life in Japan 200 years ago

Passing through the Tokyo Metro Mitsukoshimae Station, you may notice a huge paper scroll, over 17 meters long, displayed on the wall of the corridor connecting the station with the Mitsukoshi department store:

This scroll is called Kidai Shoran, Excellent View of Our Prosperous Age [in Edo] and it was painted in 1805, by an unknown artist.

Kidai Shoran illustrates, with amazing detail, scenes from the Edo period taking place along the Nihonbashi main street, more exactly between Nihonbashi and Kanda Imagawabashi.

The scroll from Mitsukoshimae is an enlarged copy of the original 12-meters painting owned by the Museum of Asian Art from Berlin.

The painting represents exactly 1671 people, of which 200 are women. Most of the people are merchants or regular citizens, but we can also find several samurai…

… and even a few mendicant monks:

There are also animals: a monkey, 20 dogs - that’s more than you can meet in today’s Tokyo :)

… 2 falcons…

… but I couldn’t find a cat |-|

The artwork looks like a comic strip, the characters are strongly individualized and everything is full of life…

… and my attention was caught by a lot of interesting scenes.
Here’s a men with a tengu mask…

… a men in a wheelchair (I didn’t know they had such devices in Edo)…

… two komuso, with their tengai “basket heads"…

… and a samurai with a large hat (or a spy disguised as a komuso?) :?:

If you have the opportunity, go to the Mitsukoshimae Station (Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hanzōmon lines) to see it, it’s well worth it!

Trecând prin staţia Tokyo Metro Mitsukoshimae, puteţi observa un uriaş sul de hârtie, de 17 metri lungime, afişat pe peretele coridorului care leagă staţia de metrou cu magazinul Mitsukoshi:

Sulul se numeşte Kidai Shoran, Excellent View of Our Prosperous Age [in Edo] şi a fost pictat în anul 1805 de un artist anonim.

Kidai Shoran redă, cu detalii precise, scene din perioada Edo de pe strada principală din Nihonbashi, între Nihonbashi şi Kanda Imagawabashi.

Pictura originală se află la Muzeul de Artă Asiatică din Berlin, cea de la Mitsukoshimae fiind o copie mărită (pictura originală are 12 metri lungime).

Desenul reprezintă exact 1.671 de oameni, dintre care 200 sunt femei. Cei mai mulţi sunt oameni obişnuiţi sau negustori, însă sunt destul de mulţi samurai…

… până şi câţiva călugări cerşetori:

Sunt şi multe animale: o maimuţă, 20 de câini - mai mulţi decât am întâlnit eu în Tokyo :)

Pictura arată ca o bandă desenată, personajele sunt puternic individualizate şi totul este plin de viaţă…

… şi mi-au atras atenţia multe scene interesante.

Iată un om cu o mască de tengu…

… un om într-un scaun cu rotile (nu ştiam că se folosea aşa ceva în Edo)…

… doi komuso, purtând pe cap coşurile de paie tengai…

… şi un samurai cu o pălărie mare (sau un spion deghizat în komuso) :?:

Dacă aveţi ocazia, mergeţi să o vedeţi în staţia Mitsukoshimae (pe liniile Tokyo Metro Ginza sau Hanzōmon), merită!
