Ginkgo trees are considered “living fossils", are among the tree species with long lifespan and are also very adaptable and resistant to pollution.
It is believed that the giant ginkgo tree of Nishi Hongan-ji was planted when the temple was established, more than 400 years ago. In autumn, the tree is absolutely majestic and it was declared a Natural Monument of Kyoto.
There’s also a beautiful legend about it, which says that the tree saved the surrounding buildings from a fire by spraying water from its branches…
