Among the 118 districts classified in Japan as Groups of Traditional Buildings (Dentōteki Kenzōbutsu-gun), 4 are in Kanazawa. Here, the most spectacular of them is the Higashiyama Higashi Chaya, a high-class geisha district established during the the Edo period.
Covering a surface of 1.8 ha, it has streets lined by two-storied houses, created in 1820 by moving buildings from central Kanazawa.
