The Kumamoto castle suffered extensive damage during the earthquake in April 16, 2016, and it is currently estimated that it will take about 20 years to finalize the repairs and to make it look as it was before the disaster.
One of the first objectives was to secure the Iidamaru Gokai yagura, which lost a large part of the foundation. A gigantic steel arm was installed under the turret to keep it from falling and to allow the rebuilding of the collapsed walls.
