During its long history, the Shinkyo bridge in Nikko changed its shape several times, from a hanging bridge in the Nara period, to a drawbridge later, becoming similar to what it is today when the Toshogu Shrine was built nearby.
The bridge we see today was built in 1904, and it is one of the three finest bridges of Japan, together with the Kintai-kyo in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi and Saruhashi in Otsuki, Yamanashi.
