In Nikko, less than an hour of walk from the crowded area around the Toshogu Shrine, you can find yourself in the middle of nature, inside of what is known as the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, where the only sound you’ll hear is the swirling water of the Daiyagawa river.
The pathway along the river is lined by about 70 statues of Bodhisattva Jizo, all dressed with red hats and bibs, watching you with friendly faces.
