The Yasaka pagoda in Higashiyama, Kyoto, is the only building remaining from a very old temple, Hokanji, established by Prince Shotoku at the end of the 6th century. Last rebuilt in 1440 by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori, Yasaka pagoda is today one of Kyoto’s symbols, and the streets surrounding it are among the most attractive and nostalgic areas in Kyoto.
