Although a third of the city was destroyed by the Mino-Owari earthquake in 1891, and later the WWII bombings severely affected the city, there are still several streets in Gifu where the old Japanese architecture survived.
The best preserved is Kawara-machi, a small neighborhood nearby the Nagara Bridge, featuring beautiful wooden buildings, some of them restaurants and shops selling local traditional craftwork products such as Gifu uchiwa fans and ayu-gashi sweets.
