It is said that the Honmaru Palace of the Nagoya castle was the most beautiful and luxurious among all the palaces of its era, lavishly decorated with paintings created by the most important artists of the time. Built in 1615 by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, the palace survived until the end of the WWII, when it was burned down by bombings.
The Nagoya Honmaru Palace was rebuilt recently from old drawings and photos, by using traditional materials and construction techniques, and the new paintings were inspired by the originals which were saved from the fire. It is an amazingly beautiful place, well worth a visit if you’re visiting Nagoya…
