Kansenden was erected by Date Tsunamura, the 4th daimyō of the Sendai Domain, as a mausoleum for his father, Date Tadamune. It is the second mausoleum built on the Kyogamine Hill, after the Zuihoden, which is dedicated to Date Masamune.
Kansenden was burned by the bombing at the end of WWII, and it was reconstructed in 1985, with the golden adornments, symbols of the power of the Date clan.
