Built more than 200 years ago by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a high-ranking official in the Tokugawa shogunate, the Rikugi-en garden is one of the few remaining Edo period gardens in Tokyo. Rikugi-en was restored in 1878 by Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of Mitsubishi, and was donated in 1938 to the City of Tokyo, being declared tokubetsu meisho, special place of scenic beauty.
