Inaugurated two years after the Rainbow Bridge, the Yurikamome line, named after the Japanese word for the black-headed seagull, was the first fully automated transit service in Tokyo, designed to serve as main transportation between the main land and the Odaiba island.
Tomorrow, Yurikamome celebrates 20 years, and it is as popular as ever, transporting on average more than 100,000 persons per day. The line’s record dates back to 2004, August 14, a Saturday when Yurikamome carried 276,372 persons going to the Tokyo Bay Fireworks Festival!
