It is said that the world famous Fushimi Inari Taisha of Kyoto was first established about 1300 years ago, in the year 711. Its buildings were completely destroyed 750 years later, during the Onin War, but fortunately it was rebuilt in 1499.
The today’s spectacular main gate, photographed here, was donated by the prominent daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi, as thanks for his mother’s recovery from illness.
