Tsumago-juku was the 42nd of 69 post towns on the Nakasendō road, which was connecting Edo to Kyoto. The town still maintains its Edo period aspect, being one of the best preserved historic towns in Japan. On the main street cars are not allowed during the day, and to preserve the old time feeling the electric lines are installed underground.
