Zen gardens are not the only Japanese gardens made to be admired as a whole… Chisen-kanshō-shiki teien is a type of garden with pond (literally meaning “pond appreciation style"), designed with the same purpose as the Zen gardens, for meditation.
The shape of the pond, the vegetation and the rocks are planned to be viewed from a single spot, usually from a pavilion or veranda, taking also advantage of a borrowed scenery background, like in this photo from Tenryu-ji, Arashiyama, Kyoto.
