The Kitano Tenmangu shrine in Kyoto was established 1071 years ago and was the first Shinto shrine ever dedicated to a real life person, Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar, poet, and politician, adviser to the Emperor Uda.
Sugawara no Michizane was enshrined as Tenjin, god of academics, of performing arts, of honesty and sincerity, and god of false accusations dispelling.
