During the last period, many Japanese castles were renovated with walls and buildings restored, because the castle is often the most important tourist attraction.
The Matsue castle’s main keep is one of the 12 surviving Japanese castles, but no other construction from the original complex survived with it.
The turret photographed here is the Taiko Yagura ("Drum turret") rebuilt in 2001, when 3 turrets of the original 5 were restored in the same style as the main tower.
