The Giant Spider from Tokyo Roppongi Hills was created by Louise Bourgeois, a well known French artist, and it is part of a series of sculptures representing spiders, dedicated by the artist to… her mother! That’s right:
The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.
The statue from Roppongi Hills, 10 meters tall, made of bronze and marble, symbolize “the role of Roppongi Hills as a place where people gather from across the globe to weave new webs of information and interaction”.
