There are quite a few well preserved historical streets in Japan, but most of them are not easily accessible for the short-term tourists. That’s why, for a first visit to Japan, I often recommend a trip to an open air museum, like the Boso no Mura Open Air Museum in Chiba.
Here you will find about 30 historical buildings, farmhouses, a kabuki stage, an old schoolhouse, a samurai residence, a water mill, an Inari shrine, and my favorite, this street with merchant houses, workshops and restaurants, that looks exactly like 150 years ago…
