The study of shodo, the Japanese calligraphy, was important in the samurai han schools of the Edo period. Writing beautifully was considered a reflection of a beautiful character and personality.
Photographed here is a scene recreated at the Nisshin-kan samurai school, in Aizu-Wakamatsu, representing the children of Aizu clan samurai learning shodo.
