Your Kofun page is handsomely presented. I thought you might like to know that I believe you have pictured the wrong Gobyō Yama Kofun as the designated tomb of Ōjin Tennō. Konda Gobyō Yama Kofun is at 34.562889° 135.609343° in Fujiidera-shi. Also, I believe the Terms of Use for Google Earth does not permit publishing screen shots without copyright notices. I posted a screen shot for you here: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/441/kondagobyouyama.jpg/ . (I'm getting out of the Image Shack hosting service, so I expect to delete it in a week or so.)

"Keyhole" imperial tombs are not specific to Japan. If you look at an aerial photo of the 13 Ming Tombs outside Beijing - you'll see they are all keyholes.

As far as size goes, the mighty Ming Yongle Emperor's Changling mausoleum runs to over 620 m in length.

Last evening, i ate in a japanese restaurant, then I bought a hoodie for my grand niece. The girl serving me is Japanese, and I think all the clothing were japanese brand.

I first became a ware of these tombs in my Japanese history class a few years back. The overhead picture of Emperor Nintoku's in our book but had it cropped so you couldn't get a sense of scale, when I finally saw a picture of it with modern Sakai around it I was totally floored. Some say that they rival the Pyramids in complexity, while I will agree on a size scale they may be larger but I'm not sure which one took more skill to vision/plan/build. There's a great resource for the tombs at http://www.city.sakai.lg.jp/kofun_en/index.html. In addition to a lot of detail about the tombs they have a comparison between the Pyramids and China's Emperor Shin's tomb (http://www.city.sakai.lg.jp/kofun_en/3d/index.html)

cool pics! Those are from Google Earth? I went to Sakai last spring. You can't get near the keyhole mounds as they are closed off. You can rent a bicycle and cycle around them. They should do helicopter rides or put up some tower so you can truly get the size and shape of them especially Nintoku's.
01/09/10 @ 06:52
That's an interesting find and they look more like giant keyholes in google earth.

I remember reading about these in the library once, but only being able to find line drawings and sketches of them! They are beautiful from the sky - amazing how the similar idea of creating monuments only truly appreciated from above permeates across cultures.

Great find!
