Temple in the Kurama mountain forest

Located on Mount Kurama, several kilometers north of Kyoto, the Kurama-dera temple is a popular pilgrimage destination. From the train station, the temple can be accessed by the Kurama-dera funicular, or by hiking on a slow climbing path.

If you choose the hiking path through the forest, you will also get to visit a several small shrines and temples, like the one photographed here. This temple is dedicated to Bodhisattva Maitreya (Miroku Bosatsu in Japanese), and it is unusually featuring a Shinto style gate…
