Tokyo Place of Scenic Beauty, Kiyosumi Teien garden

Mon, August 3, 2015

In 1876, at the beginning of the Meiji Period, the founder of Mitsubishi, Iwasaki Yataro, bought and revamped an old garden in Fukagawa, Tokyo. Originally named Fukagawa Shimbokuen, it was originally used only for employees and important guests, but was later donated to the city of Tokyo.

Opened to the general public in 1932, the garden is now known as Kiyosumi Teien, and in 1979 was designated as Tokyo Metropolitan Place of Scenic Beauty.
