The Japanese castle with the largest number of floors - 9, was the Kitanosho “lost castle”, in Fukui. Another tall tower was Tsuruga-jō, the first version of the Aizu Castle, which, when finished in 1591, was 7 stories tall. However, it survived only 20 years, because it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1611.

Rebuilt with only 5 stories, the second Aizu Castle lasted until 1868, when, at the end of the Boshin War, it was destroyed by the Meiji governmental forces. The castle we can visit today, reconstructed 50 years ago, was built with modern materials and a modern interior, but the constructors managed to faithfully reproduce the exterior appearance.
