Benten-do

Built 400 years ago, this temple dedicated to Benten, the goddess of wealth and good fortune, patroness of music, poetry, learning and arts, was built on a small artificial island on the Shinobazu Pond. Initially, the only way to reach the temple was by boat, but after a few decades a bridge was built to connect the island to the lake’s shore.

The building we see today was rebuilt in 1958 and it is one of the area’s attractions. Here it is, photographed in the evening, when it is warmly lit…
