Cedar trees on the old Tokaido road

Planted at the beginning of the Edo period at the order of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, the cedar trees were lining the Tōkaidō road to provide sun shading for travelers. A small part of the Tōkaidō road, together with the cedars, survived until today nearby the Hakone Checkpoint.

Recognized as historical site, the narrow path is winding shaded by the old trees, as the shogun wanted it hundred of years ago…
