Light was associated with Christmas since ancient times, so no wonder that just a few years after Edison invented the light bulb, one of his business associates, Edward H. Johnson, created the first electric Christmas tree lights. Decorated with 80 red, white and blue specially designed light bulbs, the first electrically illuminated Christmas tree was lit on December 22, 1882, in New York.
Of course, the idea was successful, the production of the first commercial Christmas tree lamps started in 1901, and the first outdoor Christmas illuminated trees were displayed in Boston in 1912. In 1917, an entrepreneur named Louis Szel established a factory in Japan, and just several years later, during the 1920’s, Japan became the leading manufacturer of Christmas tree lights, decorations, toys and artificial Christmas trees…
