The Dragons from the Karamon Gate

Tue, May 12, 2009, by Muza-chan

At the Toshougu Shrine in Ueno, on the Karamon Gate, an arched gate built in Chinese style, there are two dragons carved by Hidari Jingoro, a renowned sculptor from the Edo period.
One dragon is ascending to Heaven (Noboriyu) and one is descending (Kudariyu).

The legend says that when the night comes, the dragons are going to drink water from the nearby Shinobazu Pond.
