The Hakone Tozan Line

Tue, May 19, 2009, by Muza-chan

With operations starting in 1919, the Hakone Tozan Line was the first mountain railroad in Japan. Constructed in zig zag, with a maximum slope of 8% (meaning that the train climbs 1 meter vertically for each 12.5 meters of horizontal distance), the Hakone Tozan climbs 445 meters in altitude and it is one of the most spectacular mountain lines in the world.

The journey between Hakone-Yumoto and Gōra takes about 40 minutes, including 5 intermediate stations, 3 signal-only stations and three switchbacks.

It is a little unusual to find in Japan train series named “Bernina” and “St. Moritz", but that’s because some of the trains are Swiss made.

Ştiaţi că… Linia Hakone Tozan

Hakone Tozan train, series 'St.Moritz'
