Ever since the medieval Edo period, Japan produced an impressive number of books. There were many publishing houses (honya) in the three main Japanese cities, Edo, Kyoto and Osaka. And although 90% of the books production was located in these 3 cities, in Nagoya, the 4th city, there were about 100 publishers such as Fugetsudo Magosuke and Eirakuya Toshiro, who in 1814 published the manga made by Hokusai.
Photographed here is a reproduction of a book store from the Edo period, reconstructed inside the museum of Nagoya castle.
