Golden decorations at Toshogu Shrine, Ueno, Tokyo

Dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate and one of the most powerful leaders in the history of Japan, the Shinto shrines called Tōshōgū are renowned for the richness of their decorations.

They are embellished with sophisticated wood carvings, surrounded by wonderfully crafted metal lanterns and some of the walls are even covered with gold leaf…
