The Great Buddha of Gifu, a unique statue

Sun, June 30, 2019, by Muza-chan

The Great Buddha of Shouhou-ji, in Gifu, is one of the taller Great Buddha statues (Daibutsu) in Japan, having a height of 13.7 meters, 28 cm taller than the Kamakura Great Buddha.

Because of the unusual construction method, it is a unique statue: a great number of Buddhist scriptures were pasted on a wooden framework, lacquered for resistance, and covered with gold foil.
