Group of traditional buildings in Higashiyama, Kyoto

Wed, May 9, 2018, by Muza-chan

The sloped streets of Higashiyama are among the most beautiful places in Kyoto, and they have been officially registered as Groups of Traditional Buildings (Dentōteki Kenzōbutsu-gun in Japanese).

Connecting the Yasaka shrine and the Kiyomizu-dera temple, they are part of the monzenmachi (temple town) district originally established here 1,500 years ago, when the Hokanji temple was established. Hokanji doesn’t exist anymore, but the spectacular Yasaka Pagoda was originally part of it.
