It is said that 100 statues representing Jizo were donated by the followers to Tenkai, a Japanese Tendai Buddhist monk, and placed in the Kanmangafuchi Abyss in Nikko. 106 years ago, several statues were destroyed by flooding, and since then nobody knows how many of them remained.
The local legend says that every time they were numbered, a different number resulted. So they are called Bake Jizo, the “Ghost Jizo"…
