According to the Japanese tradition, 200 years ago the Empress Jingu, the consort to Emperor Chuai, donated a doll to a shrine near Dōgo Onsen in Matsuyama, praying for an easy birth and a healthy child.
This legend is the origin of the dolls photographed here, called Hime-daruma dolls, representing the Imperial couple. The Hime-daruma dolls are, together with the temari balls, are the most popular wedding and childbirth gift in Matsuyama.
