Built by a businessman named Kumashiro Watanabe in 1909, the red bricks warehouses of Hakodate are today one of the city’s symbols. Transformed in shops and restaurants, they are frequented both by locals and tourists, especially after nightfall, when they are spectacularly illuminated.
