One of the attractions from Mount Takao, Tokyo, is the funicular (cable car). The line was opened 82 years ago and holds the record of the steepest line in Japan. And you will feel that steepness, especially when descending - try to sit on the front seats, the start will be spectacular.
It has only two stations, Kiyotaki Station and Takaosan Station, located at just 1 kilometer from one another. The trip takes 5 minutes and it costs 470 yen, which leads to a funny record: with 470 yen/km, this line is more expensive per kilometer than the Shinkansen! Of course, the comparison is just for fun…
The two cable cars used today were made by Hitachi in 1968 and they are named Aoba (green leaf) and Momiji (maple leaf), photographed here at the passing track:
