Nippon Maru

In Yokohama, in the Minato Mirai 21 area, you can see a sailing ship named Nippon Maru.

I liked it very much, because, as I wrote before, I love sailing ships, they make me remember the stories with explorers read in the childhood. :) So, I wanted to know more about it and here’s what I found…

Nippon Maru, graciously nicknamed “Swan on the Pacific Ocean", was built in Kobe in 1930 and was a training ship for the cadets of the Japanese merchant marine.

It is 97 meters long, the height of the tallest mast is 46 meters from the water, it has a gross tonnage of 2278 tons and the crew is made up of 29 sailors.

Its life wasn’t “adventurous", but I’m sure that Nippon Maru remained in the memories of the 11,500 cadets who were trained on it.

In 1984, after 54 years of service, during which it made 1,830,000 kilometers, Nippon Maru was replaced by another ship, also called… Nippon Maru. The old Nippon Maru was brought to the Yokohama harbor and was opened as a museum in 1985.

În Yokohama, în Minato Mirai 21, se află o corabie cu pânze care se numeşte Nippon Maru.

Aşa cum am mai spus şi altă dată, îmi plac corăbiile cu pânze, pentru că mă fac să-mi amintesc de poveştile despre exploratori citite în copilărie. :) Am vrut să aflu mai multe date despre ea şi iată ce am găsit…

Nippon Maru, cunoscută şi cu numele de Lebăda Oceanului Pacific (Swan on the Pacific Ocean), a fost construită în anul 1930 la Kobe şi a fost nava de şcoală pentru elevii de la marina comercială japoneză.

Are 97 metri lungime, 2278 tone şi un echipaj de 29 de marinari.

Chiar dacă nu a avut o “viaţă” aventuroasă, sunt convinsă că Nippon Maru a rămas în amintirea celor 11.500 de elevi care au învăţat să navigheze pe ea.

În 1984, după 54 de ani, perioadă în care a parcurs 1.830.000 kilometri, Nippon Maru a fost înlocuită de o altă navă, care se numeşte… Nippon Maru. Vechiul Nippon Maru a fost adus în portul Yokohama şi din 1985 a devenit muzeu.
