Renowned for its spectacular Itsukushima Shrine, whose Otorii is one of Japan’s symbols, the Miyajima Island is a place full of beautiful sights, that deserves to be thoroughly explored…
Very close to the Itsukushima Shrine, after climbing a small hill covered with greenery, you will find two contrasting but equally spectacular structures: the 27.6 meters tall Five-Story Pagoda (Gojunoto), built in 1407, and the impressive Senjokaku, the Hall of One Thousand Tatami Mats, dating since 1587, the largest construction on the island (visible here just a bit, see here for a wide-angle view of Senjokaku).
Why do I said contrasting? Because unlike the vivid vermillion-colored pagoda, the Senjokaku Hall, founded by the famous Toyotomi Hideyoshi, remained after his death unpainted and unfinished until today.
