Japanese artistic manhole covers, Yamata no Orochi

Wed, November 8, 2017, by Muza-chan

Shimane is the birth place of the legend about Yamata no Orochi, the dragon vanquished by Susano-o, the kami of storms. Yamata no Orochi is one of the most important Japanese Shinto myths, because it is related to one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan, the sacred sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi, extracted by Susano-o from one of the dragon’s tails. And probably for this reason the dragon is represented on the manhole covers of the Izumo city.
