There are two types of symbolic islands in the pond of the Japanese garden: those completely isolated and without any constructions, are symbolizing Horaijima, a mythical island accessible only to immortals. The other type is represented by islands reachable by bridges, like the one in today’s photo, taken inside the Okayama Koraku-en Garden. Called Nakajima, they often feature a pavilion or even a chashitsu tea house.
