One of the most beautiful Japanese gardens of the tsukiyama ("hill garden") type is Suizen-ji in Kumamoto. It features many artificial hills, of which the tallest one is photographed here, representing Mount Fuji.
This technique of representing well known nature elements inside the garden (mountains, rivers, islands) is called shukukei, meaning reduced-scale landscape and was originally used in the gardens of the Edo period lords.
